Routine
Establishing a routine is a very important proactive discipline tool. I use the word routine deliberately.
A routine is doing the same things in the same order. A routine establishes a predictable flow and rhythm to the day.
Children often crave routine as they approach the toddler years. At a time when their life is opening up with exciting
possibilities and discovery, a routine balances that with feelings of security.
Routine enables a child to predict what's going to happen next, to anticipate the sequence of events and begin to develop
mental planning skills. This makes a child feel competent.
In this way, routine gives children a sense of power and a place for mastery to develop.
You can build
routine around meals, upon awakening, upon going to sleep, hygiene, dressing, leaving home, returning home and play.
Your life with your little one offers many opportunities to use this versitle and effective tool.
